Pompeii is an ancient Roman city near modern Naples. Researchers believe that the town was founded in 7th or 6th century BC by the Oscans. It came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC. Pompeii was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC.
On 24 August 79 AD (Post-Christianity), a nearby volcano named Mount Vesuvius erupted. The eruption destroyed the city and the city was forgotten for about 1,500 years. However Pompeii was initially rediscovered in 1599 and had a broader rediscovery in 1748 by Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre.
